We provide one of the highest Doctor-to-Staff ratios in the area. We have two Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT) on staff and another technician who studied Fisheries and Wildlife Biology at Michigan State. Our Reception staff is experienced and very knowledgeable (not to mention friendly and helpful!). Our excellent, well-trained and experienced staff helps our doctors provide your pets with thorough care and observation and you with timely communication.
Dr. M. Drew Henshaw,
a 1996 graduate of Iowa State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, has owned Oakwood since 2007. He has a special
interest in surgery, especially orthopedics. While he sees outpatients several days/week, he has established a much-needed surgical referral
center here in northern Michigan. After graduation he moved to St. Louis, Missouri to work at a busy small animal practice. Having a special
interest in surgery he joined the staff at Great Lakes Surgical Center and spent eight years in Grand Rapids practicing at the only referral
veterinary surgical center in West Michigan at that time. His wife is a Traverse City native and they have two wonderful children. Dr. Henshaw
enjoys the outdoors, including swimming, boating, kayaking, biking and karate/martial arts.
Dr. Bruce C. Cozzens,
born and raised in Traverse City, he founded Oakwood Veterinary Hospital in 1977. A graduate of MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Cozzens prefers to focus on preventative medicine and diagnosis and management of medical disease to surgery. He has extensive experience in all areas of medicine, including dentistry, skin disease, allergies, nutrition, hormonal imbalances, behavior, ear, eye and gastrointestinal disease. He and his wife, Kathy, have three sons, three daughters-in-law, and three grandchildren. A native of the Traverse City area, Dr. Cozzens enjoys fishing, hiking, and spending time with his family.
Kelly
our Practice Manager, has been with Oakwood Veterinary Hospital since 2004 and has been working with animals since she was 16 years old.
She started out as a receptionist and moved into the Practice Manager position in 2010. At home, she and her husband have three human children,
two canines, one feline, and a couple of barn critters. Kelly and her family enjoy lots of physical and relaxing outdoor activities.
Rachel a receptionist, has been working in a veterinary hospital since she was 16 years old. She joined the Oakwood staff in early 2010. She has an adorable cat, Olive. Rachel enjoys being a mom, hiking, and spending time in the great outdoors.
Karen has been with Oakwood since 2003 and has experience as a veterinary technician for over 20 years. She lives with her husband, two children, Border Terrier, and three cats in Traverse City. Karen enjoys gardening, camping, and exploring the beautiful landscapes of Northern Michigan.
Susan a technician assistant, has been with Oakwood since 2005 and really enjoys it here. It was later in life when she finally realized that she really wanted to work with animals. She and her husband Frank have two cats at home, and enjoy being outdoors, playing cards with friends, and traveling to the U.P.
Ryann is a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) who joined us in the beginning of 2009. She graduated from Baker College in 2003. A Traverse City native, she moved back to the area with her husband, son, dog, and two cats. Ryann enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to the beach, and down-hill skiing.Sarah LVT, is a 2009 graduate from MSU’s Veterinary Technician Program. Sarah has worked at Oakwood during school breaks since 2006. She and her husband have a cat, Oliver and a dog, George. Sarah enjoys spending time at home with her husband. She also enjoys boating and waterskiing with her family in the summertime.
