Veterinarians

Dr. Drew Henshaw, DVM

Dr. Drew Henshaw, DVM

Dr. M. Drew Henshaw, is a 1996 graduate of Iowa State’s College of Veterinary Medicine. He has owned Oakwood Veterinary Hospital since 2007. Dr. Henshaw’s dad is a retired veterinarian and MSU graduate, and it is from his father that Dr. Henshaw got his love of animals and decided to pursue veterinary medicine as a career. While enjoying all aspects of small animal medicine, he has a special interest in surgery, especially orthopedics. While he sees outpatients a few days per week, he has established a much-needed surgical referral center here in northern Michigan. After graduation he moved to St. Louis, Missouri to work at a busy small animal practice. Having a special interest in surgery, he joined the staff at Great Lakes Surgical Center and spent eight years in Grand Rapids practicing at the only veterinary referral surgical center in West Michigan at that time. Dr. Henshaw believes learning is a lifelong process and therefor regularly attends continuing education seminars on a variety of topics from medicine to surgery. Dr. Henshaw has two wonderful children. He also has a very active Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Indi, and rescue dog, Ella, who both keep everyone busy playing ball, tug of war, or hiking through the woods. Dr. Henshaw enjoys the outdoors, including swimming, boating, kayaking, biking and has a second degree black belt in taekwondo.

Dr. Jeffrey Mason, DVM

Dr. Jeffrey Mason, DVM

Dr Mason was born in Traverse City and raised in Northern Michigan. He attended Liberty University in Virginia for his undergraduate degree and then graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. After school he joined Oakwood Veterinary Hospital in the spring of 2012.

Although he enjoys most aspects of veterinary medicine he has a special interest in dentistry, oncology, soft tissue surgery, internal medicine and shelter medicine.

He and his wife Alicia have two amazing sons, three dogs and two cats. In his spare time he enjoys camping, skiing, hiking and cooking.

Dr. Dana (Navidonski) Nelson, DVM

Dr. Dana (Navidonski) Nelson, DVM

Dr. Dana (Navindonski) Nelson graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. After graduation, she spent time in the great plains practicing large animal medicine. However, Michigan is home. Since transitioning to exclusively small animal medicine, she finds challenge and joy in the endless variety. Her special interests include surgery, internal medicine, and behavior/ training with client education and communication as the main focus. When not working, Dr. Dana enjoys spending time with her husband, Christian, her two boys, Isaac (10) and Alexander (8) along with their 4 furry companions doing virtually anything outdoors. Dr. Dana is excited to bring her experience and enthusiasm to the great team at Oakwood Veterinary Hospital.

Dr. Megan Cooper-Lydon, DVM

Dr. Megan Cooper-Lydon, DVM

Dr. Megan Cooper-Lydon earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. She previously worked at a high-volume urgent care and emergency practice, where she provided both life-saving care and routine wellness services.

Her passion for veterinary medicine began at a young age, inspired by a love of both science and animals. As she grew, that passion deepened into a desire to strengthen the powerful bond between people and their pets through compassionate medical care.

Outside of work, Dr. Cooper enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking, biking, camping, and overlanding, with her husband, Tim, and their son, Conor. Their family includes two dogs, Edison and Weber, and two cats, Ophelia and Hannibal.

Dr. Jackie Mair, DVM

Dr. Jackie Mair, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, visits the clinic 1–2 times per month to perform TPLO procedures and manage advanced orthopedic cases.

Shelby is a Licensed Veterinary Technician and graduate of Baker College in Cadillac. Since earning her licence, she has focused on making both pets and their people feel safe and supported during their visits to Oakwood.

Shelby is passionate about patient comfort and believes that trust between veterinary teams and pet parents is essential for effective care.

In her free time, Shelby enjoys reading, listening to music, and running.

Zoja, LVT

Zoja, LVT

Zoja has been a dedicated Licensed Veterinary Technician for 5 years, proudly serving patients and pet owners at Oakwood Veterinary Hospital. A graduate of Baker College of Cadillac, she brings both knowledge and compassion to her role.

Zoja takes great pride in ensuring patient comfort and providing proper, knowledgeable client education. She is deeply committed to continual learning, always striving to improve in both veterinary medicine and personal growth. Her goal is to create a safe and positive experience for every patient.

When she’s not caring for animals, Zoja enjoys beach volleyball, camping and hiking, photography, working out, and living life to the fullest.

Amy, Veterinary Technician

Amy, Veterinary Technician

Amy brings a wealth of experience and compassion to her role as a Veterinary Technician at Oakwood Veterinary Hospital. Her journey in veterinary care began in 2005 when she started working in a kennel at a veterinary office. By 2009, she had transitioned into a veterinary technician role and has been committed to patient care ever since.

Amy is a graduate of Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, and is passionate about both animal care and client education. She finds fulfillment in advocating for her patients, providing compassionate care, and helping pet owners understand the importance of treatments—especially when it comes to dental health. She particularly enjoys performing dental cleanings and radiographs.

In her free time, Amy loves spending time with her husband and daughter, hiking with her two dogs, traveling, and boating during the summer.

Azleigh, Veterinary Assistant

Azleigh is a dedicated Licensed Veterinary Technician at Oakwood Veterinary Hospital with four years of experience in the field. She is a proud graduate of Baker College of Cadillac, where she developed her foundational knowledge and skills in veterinary care.

Azleigh prides herself on creating strong, trusting relationships with both clients and their pets. She is passionate about understanding each patient’s unique behavior and needs, and she works hard to adapt her approach to make every visit as stress-free as possible.

Outside of work, Azleigh enjoys spending time in the great outdoors. Her favorite activities include camping, kayaking, side-by-siding, and hiking.

Casey has worked in the veterinary field for over six years, providing compassionate care and client support in every aspect of her role. She is particularly passionate about animal welfare and advocates for each patient with a calm, caring presence.

Known for her excellent communication and dedication to both pets and their families, Casey is an integral part of the Oakwood team.

Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, photography, and spending time with her husband and their animals.

Jessica, Veterinary Assistant

Jessica joined the veterinary field in 2023 and has quickly developed a strong foundation in patient care. A graduate of Glen Lake Schools, she has a lifelong love for animals and is committed to learning as much as possible to better support her team and her patients.

Jessica excels at reading animal body language and adapting her handling techniques to ensure each pet feels safe and understood.

In her downtime, she enjoys reading, PC gaming, hiking with her dog, visiting local wineries and breweries, and spending time with her family.

Anna Messenger, LVT – Hospital Manager

Anna, LVT – Hospital Manager

Anna is a Licensed Veterinary Technician with over eight years of experience in the veterinary field. A proud graduate of Baker College, she brings leadership, compassion, and innovation to her role as Hospital Manager at Oakwood Veterinary Hospital. Anna is especially passionate about orthopaedic surgery and enjoys scrubbing in alongside Dr. Henshaw to support advanced surgical procedures.

Beyond her clinical work, Anna is dedicated to fostering a supportive and collaborative environment for both her colleagues and pet families. She is a strong advocate for teamwork, communication, and continuous improvement.

Outside of the hospital, Anna enjoys hiking, gardening, reading, and spending quality time with her baby.

Kelli takes great pride in patient care and is a passionate advocate for pets. She values building lasting relationships with pet owners and enjoys continuously learning new things every day to better support the needs of clients and their furry companions.
